Service
Stoker Albert E. Reed died in an explosion on the night of Monday 10 June 1901. As the ship entered had entered harbour at six knots, Chief Gunner and Commander Charles William Chipp noticed smoke and flames being emitted from the funnel. He ordered the ship anchored and found the stokehold full of steam with men lying on deck – Reed lying in a four inch pool of scalding water. Surgeon G. M. Eastment of Hero came aboard but could not save the stoker. Coroner Edward Gobel conducted an inquest at Haslar Naval Hospital on 12 June.[7]
