H.M.S. Daring was one of six 26 Knotters, early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
Like the other 26 knotters, she was broken up before the war.
Service
Launched on 25 November, 1893 with Mrs. Thornycroft performing the naming ceremony. After a prayer and before releasing the vessel, Mrs. Thornycroft presented the Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal to a Mr. Smith for "having at great risk saved a young marine from drowning, who had fallen overboard from her Majesty's ship Speedy during her trials at Sheerness.[7]
She was delivered to the Government on 11 September 1894, to be taken to Portsmouth to undergo progressive steam trials.[8]
On the night of 17 February 1896, Daring ran into the Calais packet steamer Breeze at Dover while under the command of Commander Henry Thompson. A Court of Enquiry was convened.[9]
Daring was to be paid off at Portsmouth on 21 July, 1898 and her crew turned over to Hornet.[10]
Stoker Albert E. Reed died aboard the destroyer in an explosion on the night of Monday 10 June 1901. As the ship entered had entered harbour at six knots, Chief Gunner and Commander Charles William Chipp noticed smoke and flames being emitted from the funnel. He ordered the ship anchored and found the stokehold full of steam with men lying on deck – Reed lying in a four inch pool of scalding water. Surgeon G. M. Eastment of Hero came aboard but could not save the stoker. Coroner Edward Gobel conducted an inquest at Haslar Naval Hospital on 12 June.[11]
