H.M.S. Opossum was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, a broad meta-class of early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
She was one of a select few destroyers of her era who served through the Great War despite their obsolete nature.
Service
Opossum arrived at Plymouth from Carrickfergus on 4 August, 1904. She was to depart after several days to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1904.[8]
She collided with Teazer while under the command of George Piercy Leith in August, 1904, either after or during the manoeuvres.[9]
Opossum was one of seventeen destroyers of the Reserve Division which left Sheerness on 1 July, 1905 for Spithead under the overall command of Commander R. G. Gregory in H.M.S. Spitfire.[10]
She and sixteen other destroyers of the Reserve Division arrived at Sheerness on 13 July 1905 and proceeded to Chatham.[11]
