H.M.S. Ferret was one of forty-two "A" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "26 knotter".
Service
On 11 February, 1899 while returning under the command of Lt. Herbert John Temple Marshall with other T.B.Ds. of the flotilla to Devonport after a cruise in the Channel, Ferret's propeller entangled the painter of a boat, smashing the boat and throwing the three occupants into the drink. The men were rescued with some difficulty by the Seal under the command of John Campbell Watson. As this occurred, the two destroyers came together, damaging Seal's stern plates and Ferret's torpedo tubes. The ships were taken into Devonport Dockyard to have their damage repaired.[7]
Ferret operated as part of the Devonport Instructional Flotilla until being transferred to become a tender of the gunnery training school Cambridge on 2 February 1900.[8]
Ferret managed 24 knots at a full-speed trial at Plymouth on 29 June, 1900.[9]
She participated in a Naval Review for the King at Cowes from 31 July to 6 August, 1907, and was responsible for dismantling a defensive boom before the fleet assembled.[10]
