H.M.S. Versatile was one of twenty-five "V" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1917-18.

Service

Versatile joined the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla in February, 1918[5] and remained with that formation until it was disbanded in March, 1919, at which point she was allocated along with the Eleventh's other "V"s to the new First Destroyer Flotilla.[6]

She re-commissioned on 10 December, 1920.[7]

Versatile rammed and sank the submerged submarine H 42 with all hands during Atlantic Fleet operations near Gibraltar on 23 March, 1922, suffering damage which required repair in Gibraltar.

She re-commissioned on 3 May, 1923.[8]

She was re-commissioned on 6 January, 1926.[9]

She commissioned for trials at Chatham on 25 May, 1927 and took up service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic Fleet.[10]

The destroyer was re-commissioned at the Nore on 4 September, 1928.[11]

She re-commissioned at Chatham on 18 November, 1930 for service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla of the Atlantic Fleet.[12]

Commissioned in Reserve at The Nore on 15 July, 1932.[13]

Re-commissioned on 11 January, 1933 for continued service with 5 D.F., now part of the Home Fleet.[14]

Reduced to Reserve at The Nore on 1 September, 1936.[15]
