Admiral SIR Charles Gordon Ramsey, K.C.B., (4 December, 1882 – 1966) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1904.[1]
Ramsey was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 11 on 28 July, 1908.[2] In 1910, his command Success suffered a grounding, but his Captain (D) determined that Ramsey had anchored properly and had done nothing wrong, ably refloating her.[3]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1912.[4]
Ramsey was appointed in command of the destroyer Manly on 6 November, 1914.[5] On 5 July, 1915, she was grounded. It was determined that Ramsey should have reduced speed upon a mist forming.[6]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[7]
Ramsey commanded the destroyer Acheron at the Battle of Jutland as part of the First Destroyer Flotilla.[8]
On 3 October, 1917, Ramsey was appointed in command of the destroyer Vendetta.[9] He would be her captain through the end of the war.

Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[11]
On 4 December, 1931, he was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak.
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 March, 1934.[12]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 January, 1938.[13]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 6 April, 1942 and superseded as Commander in Chief, Rosyth by Wilbraham T. R. Ford in mid-April, 1942.[14] However, Ford immediately took ill, requiring Ramsey to return to duty for a short time. On 1 June, 1942, Ford relieved Ramsey for the second and final time.[15]
He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 September, 1942.[16]
