Harold Ernest Sulivan
Captain Harold Ernest Sulivan, D.S.O., (15 June, 1876 – 30 August, 1946) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Sulivan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1898.[1]
While serving in Dido, on 3 November, 1899 he injured his left knee and had to return the England to obtain treatment in Haslar Hospital.[2]
In 1901, the Vice-Admiral of the Channel Squadron logged Sulivan as being responsible for the lost of the pinnace of H.M.S. Repulse through "neglect of duty."[3]
Sulivan was appointed in command of the destroyer Dee on 27 October, 1904.[4] This first command would be unusually long, lasting nearly six years.[5]
Sulivan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911.[6]
Sulivan was appointed in command of the destroyer Martin on 2 January, 1913.[7]
Great War
He commanded the flotilla leader Kempenfelt at the Battle of Jutland, where she was the divisional leader in the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla.[8]
He was mentioned in despatches on 15 September, 1916 for his leadership at Jutland, "as 2nd in Cd of Flotilla he manoeuvred his half very ably & at night when Castor could make no signals owing to damage by gun-fire, he very ably turned his half flotilla & kept clear of first half flotilla manoeuvring.".[9]
Sulivan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1917.[10]
On 1 July, 1918, Sulivan was appointed in command of the depot ship Woolwich.[11]
Post-War
Sulivan was appointed in command of the light cruiser Curlew in June, 1921.
He was placed on the Retired List on 19 October, 1922 upon the expiration of his foreign service leave.[12]
Sulivan died of jaundice.
