Captain (retired) Henry Ioan Montagu Lawrence Scott, R.N. (7 September, 1885 – 13 April, 1944) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Scott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1907[1]

He was appointed to Tartar as first Lieutenant on 10 September, 1909.

Scott was appointed in command of the destroyer Brazen on 23 July, 1912.[2]

Great War

Scott was appointed Lieutenant in Command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 31 on 29 July, 1914.[3] On 29 August, he grounded his torpedo boat in the Firth of Forth, incurring Their Lordships' displeasure "for careless navigation & gross carelessness."[4]

Scott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1915.[5]

On 11 October, 1916, Scott was appointed in command of the destroyer Oriana. He would command her through the end of the war, initially as part of the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla, which was tasked with screening the Battle Cruiser Force.[6]

Post-War

Scott was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1920.[7]

In August 1921, he damaged Windsor's propellor and was informed that he should have been on deck at the time of the accident.[8]

Scott married Evelyn Mary Mure on 25 October, 1923 at the Church of the Annunciation in Bryanston.[9]

He lost Tyrian's anchor and cable on 12 July, 1927. His answers to Admiralty questions in the matter were deemed unsatisfactory.[10]

Scott's last appointment to command appears illegible in his service record, but may have been to Greenwich for a group of something, appointed on 17 February, 1931 and discharged on 26 June, 1931. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 6 January, 1932 with the rank of Captain.[11]

He was appointed as Family Welfare Officer, Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport on 1 April, 1936, initially on a probationary basis.

Scott was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth on 9 March 1944 with jaundice. He died on the 13th of April of myocardial failure and obstructive jaundice.[12]
