H.M.S. P38 was one of forty-four "P" class patrol boats built for the Royal Navy. In 1925, she was renamed Spey, the only "P" boat to be given a name.
Service
In June, 1917, P38 was one of eight "P" boats in the Portsmouth Escort Flotilla.[5]
P38 was re-commissioned at Portland on 7 October, 1920.[6]
She commissioned on 11 February, 1925 for work with the Fishery Protection Flotilla under her new name, H.M.S. Spey.[7][8]
Spey paid off into Dockyard Control on 1 September, 1936.[9]
In 1938, her bell (reading Spey) was one of a number ships' bells the Royal Navy offered for sale to officers and others interested. It commanded a price of between £3-£10 plus packing and shipping. Interested parties were to apply to win one at its stated price, stating any special attachment or claim they had to the item(s) applied for.[10]
