Admiral SIR Frederick Hew George Dalrymple-Hamilton, K.C.B., R.N. (27 March, 1890 – 26 December, 1974) was an officer in the Royal Navy who served in both World Wars.
Life & Career
His service record indicates that he was born in London, but other sources indicate Bargany, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Dalrymple-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 August, 1911.[1]
Dalrymple-Hamilton commanded six different destroyers in eight separate wartime appointments. His service record is difficult to read, but he appears to have collided with a trawler when in command of Druid and in May 1918 he was blamed for damaging the propellers of H.M.S. Murray. At the very end of the war, he was admitted to Queensferry Hospital for influenza.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 August, 1919. He was admitted to hospital in January 1921 for some defect ("deflected nasal [illeg]"?) which required an operation to set right. Following this, he was placed on three months half pay to convalesce.
Dalrymple-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1924.
Commander Dalrymple-Hamilton was appointed to the flotilla leader Keppel on 10 February, 1925 and remained with her as she neared completion at Portsmouth, but it is not clear whether he commissioned her.[2]
Dalrymple-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1931.
In 1936, he asked for relief to "attend to most urgent private affairs."
Dalrymple-Hamilton served as captain of the battleship Rodney from November 1939 until he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1941. This placed him in her when she participated in the sinking of the battleship Bismarck.
Dalrymple-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 June, 1944.
He was promoted to the rank of Admiral with seniority of 4 January, 1948 and retired from the naval service on 4 October, 1950.
