H.M.S. Pallas was one of nine cruisers of the Pearl class completed for the Royal Navy in 1891 and 1892.
Construction
Pallas was laid down on 1 July 1889 and was floated out of Dock 4 at Portsmouth on 30 June, 1890, being christened by Miss Guendolen Gorst, daughter of Sir John Gorst, M.P.. She was built with a steel bottom, not sheathed in copper, as she was intended for service in areas where docking would be more available than to many of her sisters built for service in Colonial Defence roles. Her hull weighed 1,250 tons, contributing to a load displacement of 2,573 tons. She was intended to deliver 14.75 knots on a four day run on a natural draught horsepower of 2,500. Cost was expected to be £150,186 in total, including £54,410 for propulsion and £7,597 for guns.[6]
