H.M.S. Brilliant was one of 21 Apollo class second-class cruisers completed in the early to mid 1890s.

Service

She was one of three cruisers, by early 1894, whose old pattern 6-in guns had been replaced by new quick-firing models. This work would be extended, in stages, to other contemprary cruisers.[7]

She re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 3 April, 1906. In early 1908, she was attached to the Fourth Cruiser Squadron.[8]

In 1910, despite her advanced age, Brilliant was the best gunnery ship of the three tested in the Fourth Cruiser Squadron, scoring 52.52, compared to the average 41.888.[9]
