Claud Finlinson Allsup
Captain Claud Finlinson Allsup, D.S.O. (21 August, 1881 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in East Maxall, Charlton.
Allsup was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1903.[1]
Allsup was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1911.[2]
Allsup was appointed in command of the destroyer Nautilus on 4 September, 1911. In January, 1912, he struck a wall of the North Lock in Chatham and was blamed for a "want of care". Furthermore, a July inspection found that her gunners were "not up to the mark."
He married Jessie Bryer Lisa Hastings (?) on 21 August 1913.
Great War
On 10 July, 1914, Allsup was appointed in command of the destroyer Legion. In January, 1915 she damaged an oil ship and Allsup was cautioned in the matter. This was, however, more than offset by his special mention by Tyrwhitt for his performance in command on 17 October, 1914 in the Battle off Texel. Embodied in a letter on vellum, it was considered equivalent to a mention in despatches.
Allsup was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[3]
Allsup was in command of the destroyer Mystic at the Battle of Jutland, where she operated with the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla.[4]
He lost a torpedo from Mystic in 1916 and was faulted in this by Admiral Jellicoe.
Allsup was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Anzac in January, 1918.[5]
Post-War
Allsup was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Malcolm on 9 January, 1920.[6]
Allsup was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1920. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 4 July, 1922.[7]
World War II
Appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Asturias on 4 September, 1939, he was superseded on 25 November.[8]
Reverted to the Retired List on 26 November, 1939.
