David Laidlaw Cowan

Commander David Laidlaw Cowan, D.S.C., R.N., Retired (20 April, 1888 – 19 September, 1946) served in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Beccles, Suffolk.

Cowan transferred into the R.N. from the R.N.R..

Cowan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 6 October, 1915.

In December 1921, Cowan was appointed to the miesweeper Fitzroy as navigating officer, in lieu of a specialist in that branch. He would serve in the ship in a variety of capacities, including as executive officer and briefly in command, until 1926.

Cowan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 6 October, 1923.

Cowan was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 20 April, 1933.

World War II

Reverted to the Retired List as medically unfit on 4 January, 1941.
