Captain William Howard Dennis Friedberger, D.S.O. (16 July, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Friedberger entered the Royal Navy with the May 1909 intake term at the Training Establishment. He passed out with sixty-one other midshipmen in April, 1913 ranked second in order of merit on his examinations.[1]
Friedberger was trained for service in submarines in mid-1917 and appointed to Maidstone for service in boats of the Ninth Submarine Flotilla on 2 June. On 27 July, he was appointed to E 4. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1917.[2]
On 10 March 1918, he was appointed to E 45. On 26 August, he was appointed to Dolphin for L 14[?] upon her commissioning.[3]
Friedberger was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1925. He served as first officer in the submarine X1 from 1 December, 1925 to 5 June, 1927.[4]
Friedberger was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1931.[5]
World War II
Friedberger was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1939.[6]
In 1941-42, he was evaluated as "not really a leader, but rather a driver" who was in exceptional physical condition.
He supervised negotiations in Washington, where he "did well despite U.S. Navy obstructions."
He was placed on the Retired List on 8 January, 1949.[7]
