Life & Career

The son of Lt. Col. Keays of the Indian Army.

Emerging from the Training Establishment, Keays served in the dreadnought Colossus from 7 April, 1915 through 30 July, 1917, seeing action in her at the Battle of Jutland. His request to be transferred to the Royal Indian Marine in October 1916 was deferred for consideration after the cessation of hostilities. Folllowing a Torpedo Control course at H.M.S. In April 1918 he was appointed to the destroyer Winchester, where he served until mid-June 1918 when he was appointed to the destroyer Petard. Following his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1918 (adjusted to 15 October) and an October request for submarine service, on 7 November he was sent to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.[2]

Keays was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1926.[3]

From 1929 through mid-1931, he served in Marlborough and Royal Sovereign.[4]

He qualified as an acting interpreter in French in October, 1935.
