Commander (retired) Norman McCrea Lewis, (2 March, 1875 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain E. Lewis.[1]
Lewis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1896.[2]
Appointed as first officer in the destroyer Archer on 30 August, 1900, Lewis would have a wretched year 1903 in her, in which £53 went missing from her canteen fund early in the year and two prisoners escaped toward the end of the year. Vice-Admiral Fanshawe wrote two expressions of censure for Lewis, which Lewis petitioned to have modified in 1904. This request was refused.[3]
Lewis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1904.[4]
Lewis was placed on the Retired List as unfit for further service due to an injury to his leg and "very defective vision" on 1 March, 1905. The following year, He would become a Commander Instructor, R.N.V.R..[5]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 2 March, 1915 while serving in the Great War training new Air Service mechanics. He woudl later serve again in Magnificent and even assume command when she paid off in May 1916. He would manage Boom Defences for a time before being placed in command of a "Q" ship whose loss he survived after she was torpedoed by U 62.[6]
On 21 December 1918 he was to revert to the Retired List upon the expiration of a two month leave, which transpired on 3 February, 1919.[7]
