H.M.S. Archer was one of twenty-nine destroyers of the Acheron class.

Radio

Archer was one of 18 Acheron class destroyers fitted with W/T in 1912, becoming one of 123 destroyers so far fitted with Destroyer Sets.[7]

Service

On commissioning at Portsmouth she joined the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

In mid-1913, Archer was in the First Destroyer Flotilla.[9]

In July, 1914, Archer was serving in First Destroyer Flotilla, part of First Fleet.[10]

Immediately before the start of war, plans to fit two fairleads at the stern were deferred.[11]

As part of the Harwich Force, William Frederick Blunt's First Destroyer Flotilla participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August, 1914, with Archer under the command of Herbert Francis Littledale. At 11.30am, Archer fired two torpedoes at "a four funnel light cruiser" at a range of 4,500 yards with her Torpedo Director set for an enemy speed of 20 knots at an inclination of 113 left. No hits were reported, as the target appeared to turn.[12]

In 1915, Archer collided with the destroyer Forester after the other destroyer made an unusually large course change.[13]

In October, 1916, Archer was transferred to the Second Destroyer Flotilla, which was under orders of the Commander-in-Chief of Devonport.

In August, 1917, Archer was transferred to the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla, which was operating in the Mediterranean.

In January, 1919, she was ordered to return home.

Archer paid off at Chatham on 27 April, 1920.[14]
