Commander David Laidlaw Cowan, D.S.C., R.N., Retired (20 April, 1888 – 19 September, 1946) served in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Beccles, Suffolk.
Cowan transferred into the R.N. from the R.N.R..
Cowan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 6 October, 1915.[1]
In December 1921, Cowan was appointed to the miesweeper Fitzroy as navigating officer, in lieu of a specialist in that branch. He would serve in the ship in a variety of capacities, including as executive officer and briefly in command, until 1926.[2]
Cowan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 6 October, 1923.[3]
Cowan was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 20 April, 1933.[4]
World War II
Reverted to the Retired List as medically unfit on 4 January, 1941.[5]
