Service

Curlew was fitted with a director system when she was commissioned in December, 1917.[8] She was immediately assigned to the Fifth Light Cruiser Squadron of the Harwich Force.

She was re-commissioned at Rosyth on 27 April, 1920.[9]

She re-commissioned on 24 November, 1922 for service with the Eighth Cruiser Squadron on the North America and West Indies Station.[10]

Re-commissioned at Devonport on 28 April, 1927 for the Third Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean, but was temporarily attached to the China Station.[11]

Curlew paid off into Dockyard Control at Chatham on 15 September, 1928.[12]

The ship re-commissioned at Chatham on 31 March, 1931.[13]

Paid off into Reserve 23 August, 1933.[14]

In 1934, her bell was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[15]

Curlew was re-configured as an anti-aircraft cruiser in 1935 and 1936 and was re-commissioned at Chatham on 14 October, 1936 and joined the Reserve Fleet at The Nore.[16]
