John Courtnell (25 November, 1855 – 9 May, 1932) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Courtnell was promoted to Gunner on 25 April, 1884, although for several months he was listed as an Acting Gunner.[1]

As an Acting Gunner, Courtnell was appointed to the ironclad Alexandra on 17 September, 1884.[2]

Courtnell was appointed to the ironclad turret ship Thunderer on 26 April, 1885.[3]

Courtnell was appointed to the gunnery training school Excellent on 7 April, 1886.[4]

Courtnell was lent for command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 4 during the 1889 Manoeuvres.[5]

Courtnell was appointed to the torpedo training school Vernon on 9 October, 1889.[6]

Courtnell was appointed to the President for service at the Admiralty on 28 March, 1896.[7]

Courtnell was appointed to the third class protected cruiser Katoomba as Gunner (T) on 13 June, 1899.[8]

Courtnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 12 March, 1909.

Courtnell was retired due to age on 25 November, 1910. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (retired) on 12 March of an illegible year. He died at Haslar Hospital of pneumonia and heart failure.
