Sold: 1905

H.M. T.B. 4 was one of 19 first-class torpedo boats of the T.B. 1 class.

Service

After her trials in the spring of 1881, T.B. 4 was sent to Chatham Dockyard. On 13 May, 1881 The Times reported that she had been moored in the Chatham steam basin and would remain there "until required for service."[5]

In 1881 there were twenty T.B.s in all, and T.B. 4 was reported as "not fitted" for Whitehead and serving out of Chatham with her sister T.B. 6 and Yarrow's T.B. 14. There was some noted lethargy in getting these boats armed.[6]

During the crisis following the Panjdeh Incident in 1885, T.B. 4 was put into commission as part of Admiral Phipps Hornby's Particular Service Squadron on 28 April, and was later involved in the year's Annual Manoeuvres at Berehaven.[7]

Commissioned as tender to Valorous in May 1886 for flotilla manoeuvres.[8][9]

She was still at Chatham in 1895, one of two first class torpedo boats of less than 125 feet, along with eight of greater length.[10]

She was sold in 1905 and entered mercantile service with the name Rocket.[11]
