H.M.S. Sable was one of sixty-two "R" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1916-17.
Service
Sable joined the Grand Fleet's Fifteenth Destroyer Flotilla in December, 1916.[8]
She was rammed in the Captain's cabin by squadron mate Salmon in 1917 when the destroyers were proceeding in fog at 20 knots, despite each ship throwing its helm over and backing one engine hard to assist. Woodward, in command of Sable shouted to Dawson to "keep your stem in the hole," but the ships separated. Dawson deemed it fortunate that his ship struck just aft of Sable's main engine room, whose large volume may have meant her loss. The two returned to Rosyth, Sable with her quarter deck nearly awash, to be docked in the same dock. Their undocking was delayed by a day or two by damage Salmon sustained when a horse and cart fell into the dock, apparently through an error by the carter. The horse was killed by the accident.[9]
Sable was re-commissioned with reduced Complement on 17 October, 1919.[10]
She was reduced to Reserve Complement at Portsmouth on 12 March, 1920[11] and completed to reduced complement there on 1 September.[12]
Completed to Special Complement at Portsmouth on 25 January, 1921.[13]
Reduced to Reserve at Portsmouth on 17 November, 1925.[14]
Following an earlier round of a flotilla leader and seventeen destroyers, Sable was named as one of an additional fifteen destroyers to be scrapped in the fiscal year starting 1 April, 1926.[15]
