H.M.S. Theseus was one of nine protected cruisers of the Edgar class completed between 1893 and 1896.

Service

On 23 March, 1897 while Theseus was exercising outside the harbour at Malta, a torpedo exploded while it was being lowered over the side, injuring thirty men, some severely. Two men had to have their legs amputated soon thereafter, and another died. The ship was docked to repair damage sustained in the incident.[8]

She recommissioned at Devonport on 4 February, 1913.[9]

In April 1914, she was in the Training Squadron in Queenstown.

Theseus paid off at Sheerness on 10 February, 1920.[10]
