Wilfred Tomkinson

Vice-Admiral Wilfred Tomkinson, C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy (15 November, 1877 – 7 October, 1971) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lieutenant on 1 October, 1899.[1]

Tomkinson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1910.[2]

On 29 November, 1910, he was appointed to Mercury for command of the Portsmouth Submarine Flotilla, remaining in command of that formation until 12 January, 1912 when Tomkinson was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Forth and for command of the Devonport Seagoing Flotilla.[3]

In December 1913, Tomkinson was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal for saving life at sea.[4]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Lurcher on 30 July, 1914, also to oversee submarines.[5][6]

Tomkinson was promoted to Captain on 30 June, 1916.[7]

On 1 December 1916, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Aurora.

Tomkinson was appointed as captain of Colossus from 6 July, 1917,[8] remaining there until mid-November when he was relieved by Charles P. Beaty-Pownall.

He was appointed in command of the new battlecruiser Hood on 1 January, 1920.[9]

On 25 October, 1926, Tomkinson was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V, vice Davies.[10]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 2 August, 1927, vice Woollcombe.[11]

Tomkinson was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 February, 1932.[12]
