Warren Hastings D'Oyly
Vice-Admiral Warren Hastings D'Oyly, Royal Navy, Retired (3 August, 1867 – 22 March, 1950) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
Born in Bhangulpore India, D'Oyly was the third son of Sir Warren Hastings D'oyly, tenth baronet.[1] By the time he joined the Navy, he was listing his grandfather, Sir F. Halliday, K.C.B. as his guardian.[2]
D'Oyly gained two months' time on passing out of Britannia.
D'Oyly was promoted to Lieutenant on 30 June, 1891.[3]
D'Oyly was appointed in command of the gunboat Thrush on 1 December, 1899. He assumed command when she commissioned on 10 January, 1900 for service on the Cape of Good Hope Station. He would distinguish himself in command of Thrush in support of the Gambia Expeditionary Force on the Niger River in February, 1902. He was invalided from command in mid-1902 and specially promoted to Commander on 26 June, 1902. He would not be found fit until 24 October.[4]
D'Oyly was promoted to Captain on 30 June, 1908.[5]
He married Sylvia Agnes Alicia Hart in 1912.[6]
In November 1912, D'Oyly was appointed in command of Lancaster.
In August 1915, he assumed command of the armoured cruiser Donegal.
D'Oyly was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 September, 1919 and placed on the Retired List the following day at his own request.[7]
D'Oyly was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired) on 18 January, 1925.[8]
D'Oyly died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
