Reginald Montagu Roberts West

Captain (retired) Reginald Montagu Roberts West, R.N. (14 June, 1875 – 14 December, 1944) served in the Royal Navy. One Service Record suggests he may have been named Reginald Montagu Alston-Roberts-West.

Life & Career

The son of J. R. West, Esq. was born at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.[1]

West was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1897.[2]

West was appointed in command of the gunboat Thistle on the China Station on 20 February, 1906. he was injured on 18 June 1906 when the stairs to a pier gave way beneath him, leaving him with a fractured rib and a severely bruised left leg. He was discharged from the hospital on 14 July. By 1908, he was known for his familiarity with Chinese customs and his interest in intelligence work. He returned home via Siberia in 1908.[3]

West was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1909.[4]

West was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 15 August, 1922.[5]
