Life & Career

Born in Rochdale.

Royds was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 April, 1895.

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1905.

Royds was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1912.

He was appointed in command of the Bellona on 5 July, 1913,[1] through the beginning of war.[2]

He was appointed in command of the Canterbury on 24 April, 1916,[3] and commanded her in support of the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland.[4]

Royds was appointed in command of the battleship Malaya in May 1921.

Royds was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 12 May 1922, and to Vice-Admiral on 1 August 1927, retiring the following day.[5]

He was advanced to Admiral on the retired list on 1 July, 1932.

Royds reported on 27 December 1938 that he was "a little lame with arthritis." He does not appear to have served in World War II.

"He took a keen interest in politics and served as president and chairman of the Kingston-upon-Thames Conservative and Unionist Association for several years before he was elected as its member of parliament in 1937. He was knighted in the following year, and was a member of the House of Commons until 1945. He also served for some years on the Surrey County Council" (The Times).[6]
