John Knox Laughton

Professor SIR John Knox Laughton, M.A., HON. Litt.D. (CANTAB), HON. D.Litt. (OXON), F.R.Met.S., R.N. (23 April, 1830 – 14 September, 1915) was a Naval Instructor in the Royal Navy. He served during the Crimean War and on various stations and eventually became lecturer in mathematics and meteorology at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He also served as President of the Royal Meteorological Society from 1882 to 1884. He left the Navy in 1885 to become Chair in Modern History at King's College, London. He co-founded the Navy Records Society in 1893, of which he served as Secretary until he resigned from the position in 1912. He was knighted for his efforts in 1907. The modern Laughton Chair of Naval History at King's College, London, is named in his honour.

Laughton was knighted at Buckingham Palace on 15 July, 1907.
