Captain (retired) John Knox Laird, C.B., R.N. (11 May, 1867 – 21 December, 1920) served in the Royal Navy. His son, Hugh Roy MacGregor Laird, would also serve.

Life & Career

Born in Birkenhead.

Consequent to a Court Martial convened on 12-13 December 1883 regarding the grounding of Northampton, Laird had six weeks leave stopped and he was reprimanded and logged by the Commander-in-Chief for being below in his hammock during watch. A Sir F. Richards wrote a note contesting the fairness of this.

Laird was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1890.[1]

Laird was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1902. He commanded a destroyer in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1903, H.M.S. Success (according to The Times) or Violet (according to his Service Record).[2]

Laird was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 19 January, 1911.[3]
