John Kelty McLeod
Lieutenant-Commander John Kelty McLeod, D.S.O., R.N. (18 July, 1884 – 26 September, 1920) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Colombo. McLeod ranked seventh among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2620 marks.[1]
McLeod was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1906.
McLeod was appointed Lieutenant & Commander to the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 26 on 22 August, 1912.[2]
McLeod was appointed in command of the destroyer Ostrich on 3 February, 1914.[3]
On 31 October, 1914, he was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 10.[4]
McLeod was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1914.
McLeod was appointed in command of Zylpha when she entered service as Q.6, dated 23 September, 1915. He was commended for his performance in action against a submarine on 17 April, 1917 and for bravely bringing the ship back into harbour after she'd been torpedoed, for which he would eventually be awarded a D.S.O.. He left the Q-ship when she paid off on 18 June, 1917.
He was appointed in command of Hyderabad from September 1917 through 11 November, 1919 (or perhaps 4 April, 1919).
McLeod died at Haslar Hospital on 26 September 1920 while appointed for service with the Captain of the Dockyard at Portsmouth, having suffered urinary and then bronchial illnesses earlier in the year.
