John James Cullen Smail

Commander (retired) John James Cullen Smail, ( – 1901) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Smail served with the Naval Brigade and was in charge of boats during the capture of Canton in 1857. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 8 April, 1863.[1]

Smail was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Commander on 3 July, 1872.[2]

Smail failed to report in 1908 and his name was removed from the Navy List. It would emerge that Smail dha died in 1901, his widow did not inform the Navy of this until 11 March, 1912.[3]
