Paymaster Rear-Admiral SIR John Henry George Chapple, K.C.B., C.V.O., Royal Navy (4 December, 1859 – 5 March, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Chapple was born at Queenstown on 4 December, 1859, the son of John E. Chapple, Master (later Captain) in the Royal Navy.[1][2] He was educated at the Royal Naval School, New Cross.[3]

He entered the Navy as an Assistant Clerk on 15 January, 1876.

He was promoted to the rank of Assistant Paymaster on 4 December, 1880.

He was promoted to the rank of Paymaster on 11 December, 1888.

He was promoted to the rank of Staff Paymaster on 11 December, 1894.

On the occasion of King George V's coronation he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 19 June, 1911.[4]

Chapple was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Civil Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 1 January, 1918.[5] He was appointed to the new position of Paymaster Director-General on 6 March, and retired at his own request on 1 July.[6] By Order in Council of 20 December, 1919, the position of Paymaster Director-General was retroactively given the rank of Paymaster Rear-Admiral.[7]
