Captain (retired) Hugh Davenport Colville (1 January, 1881 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Colville was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.[1]

Colville was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1910.[2]

Colville was placed in command of the new destroyer Racoon in October, 1910. In early 1911, Captain (D), First Destroyer Flotilla Arbuthnot would take exception to the untidy state of affairs aboard Racoon, which is odd given the ship's spanking-new character. Colville was therefore removed from command on 25 February. Colville's request to be placed on half pay was refused and he was instead appointed to join the battleship Britannia. Colville was appointed to the battlecruiser Princess Royal in mid-November, 1912 – shortly after Britannia paid off.[3]

Colville narrowly dodged an appointment in command of the gunboat Bramble on the China Station and was instead appointed in command of the destroyer Porpoise on 28 January, 1914. Colville was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915 and remained in command of Porpoise. He was her captain at the Battle of Jutland, operating as part of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla.[4] Shortly after the battle, Colville was appointed in command of the "M" Class destroyer Relentless.

After two years in command of Relentless, Colville was next appointed in command of the flotilla leader Gabriel on 14 June, 1918.[5]

Post-War

Colville was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Mackay on 9 July, 1920.[6]

Colville was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 November, 1922 and was to be eligible for a step in rank at age 45. Accordingly, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1926.[7]

Colville changed his last name to Wakeman-Colville in 1927.[8]
