Vice-Admiral Hubert Seeds Monroe, D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (4 November, 1877 – 15 July, 1966) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of the Right Honourable J. Monroe.

Monroe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1900.[1]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Dasher on 3 August, 1906.[2]

Monroe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1912.[3]

On 14 April, 1913, he was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 113, which was part of the Nore Local Defence Flotilla.[4]

In October 1914, he was chastised for failing to observe orders governing the entry of H.M. ships into defended ports. Worse, perhaps, on 21 December, 1914 he grounded the flotilla's 4th division, damaging one of T.B. 113's propellers. He was told to be more careful in future.[5]

Monroe would command the destroyer Electra through most of the war, operating her as part of the Nore Local Defence Flotilla.[6]

Monroe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1918.[7]

On 15 October 1918, he assumed command of the old second class protected cruiser Venus as flag captain to Rear-Admiral Gaunt.[8]

After paying off Venus, Monroe was appointed Flag Captain, East Indies on 16 June, 1919. He'd remain there only until 21 July.[9]

He was appointed in command of H.M.S. Thunderer in September, 1925.

He was appointed in command of the battleship H.M.S. Barham in December, 1927, remaining with her for just two months, at which time he assumed command of Ramillies.

Monroe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 August, 1929, vice A. K. Betty.[10]

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 3 April, 1931[11] and advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1934.[12]

World War II

Monroe was appointed Head of Relatives of Naval Officers Information Bureau on 4 September, 1939. He kept at this port into at least 1945 and was reverted to the Retired List on 26 August, 1946.[13]
