Henry Briggs Lang
Captain Henry Briggs Lang, (23 February, 1845 – 11 September, 1896) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Lang was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 August, 1866.
He was blamed for grounding the gunboat Mallard on 18 September, 1879.
Lang was promoted to the rank of Commander on 19 March, 1880.
Lang was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1889.
Lang drowned when a boat from Narcissus overturned in the Bay of Tartary (Groomvitcha Bay in another account). The ship had been on the China Station. A Japanese sailor and four others discovered Lang's body 7.5 miles south of the bay on 30 September, 1896. His pockets contained a gold watch, rings and other jewelry, which were taken to Japan and sold. This resulted in the arrest of the Japanese involved, and the recovered portion of the valuables were forwarded to Lang's widow in England.[1]
