H.M.S. Triumph was originally built for Chile as Libertad, and purchased along with sister Swiftsure on 3 December, 1903.[8] As a consequence, she did not resemble contemporary British ships.

Service

Triumph paid off at Chatham and recommissioned at Sheerness on 11 April, 1913 with nucleus crew paid off from Sutlej, for temporary service in the Eighth Battle Squadron. She made for Devonport the following day.[9]

Recommissioned 28 August 1913 with Captain Philip Streatfeild.[10]

Triumph served in China until 1915 and then moved to the Mediterranean.[11]

Loss

Triumph was torpedoed through her deployed anti-torpedo netting,[12] and despite being underway in a circle.[13] Chelmer removed nearly her entire crew in twenty minutes alongside.[14]

Alterations

In 1913 it was approved that Triumph receive a Mark III Dumaresq, Pattern 760. Having been supplied with the Mark III variant, she was to surrender a Mark I instrument.[15]
