H.M.S. Liberty was one of twenty-two destroyers of the Laforey class.
Service
In July, 1914, Liberty was part of the Third Destroyer Flotilla, then part of the First Fleet. In April, 1915 the flotilla became part of the Harwich Force. Around October 1915, the formation was renamed the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla.
At the Battle of Jutland, she operated as one of six Harwich Force destroyers screening the Second Battle Cruiser Squadron.[6]
On 8 February 1917, Liberty, under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Philip Wilfred Sidney King rammed and sank UC 46 southeast of Goodwin Sands.
In April, 1917, 9 D.F. was disestablished and Liberty joined the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla, which was operating out of Devonport.
In December 1918, 4 D.F. was disbanded and Liberty was sent to the Nore to await her fate.
Reduced to C. & M. Party at the Nore on 29 November, 1919.[7]
Habitability
In July 1914, it was decided not to supply portable fans to ventilate the Stokers' Mess Deck and the Chief and Petty Officers' Mess Deck.[8]
