Douglas Carteret Sealy

Lieutenant Douglas Carteret Sealy, D.S.C.* (23 November, 1891 – 23 March, 1922) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of a civil engineer, Sealy's first ship was the iconic Dreadnought, in which he served from mid-May 1909 to mid-September 1910 when he was appointed to the armoured cruiser Natal for five months. He would additionally serve in Patrol, the battlecruiser Inflexible and the pre-dreadnought battleship Agamemnon through mid-1913 when he was appointed to Dolphin for submarine instruction.

Sealy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 April, 1914. His first appointment in a submarine was to D 3, from 24 October, 1914 to 5 July 1916, when he was appointed in command of the coastal submarine C 27. This appointment lasted a year and a half.

Sealy died after the war while in command of H 42 when she was rammed while submerged near Gibraltar by the "V" Class destroyer H.M.S. Versatile on 23 March, 1922. There were no survivors from the submarine.
