Design & Construction

Designed to replace larger ships in service using Isherwood-designed machinery ordered for the cancelled 1864 Algoma class. It was expected they would be useful for peacetime foreign service duties, "performing with greater economy all the services that could be rendered by larger vessels" according to the Chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repair.[1]
