The rank of Staff Commander was a commissioned rank in the Military Branch of the Royal Navy. It was established by Order in Council of 11 June, 1863, and given to Masters of 15 years' seniority. It ranked after Commanders and above Lieutenants.[1] The last Staff Commander on the active list was possibly Frederick W. E. H. Smith, who was promoted to the rank of Staff Captain on 17 November, 1904.
