Robert Andrew Abernathy
Robert Andrew Abernathy (26 July, 1880 – ) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Abernathy was born in Tennessee and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state. [1]
Upon graduating with the Class of 1900, Abernathy first served on the store ship Celtic.[2]
Abernathy was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 1 July, 1902. [3]
Abernathy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 July, 1905. [4]
Abernathy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1912. [5]
He was appointed to command of the old cruiser Chicago, which was then serving as a training ship for the Massachusetts Naval Militia, in 1912. [6] He retained this command until the middle of 1915. [7]
Great War
Abernathy was assigned to the battleship Kearsarge in 1915 as Executive Officer. [8] He remained on Kearsarge throughout the war and into early 1919. [9] He was promoted to the temporary rank of Commander on 1 July, 1918. [10]
Interwar Period
In May 1919 he was appointed to command the Naval Training Camp in Seattle, Washington, and was promoted to the permanent rank of Commander on 1 July, 1919. [11]
Abernathy was appointed to command the destroyer Lamberton in November 1921. [12] This was followed by appointment to command the gunboat Helena by early 1923. [13]
In November 1923, Abernathy was appointed to command the Receiving Ship at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii.[14] He remained in command into 1925.[15]
Abernathy's final active service was as Commanding Officer of the oiler Ramapo from 3 June, 1926. During this appointment he was the senior Commander on the Active List. [16]
Passed over for promotion, Abernathy retired 28 June, 1928 on his own application after 30 years of service under the Act of 13 May, 1908. [17]
World War II
Abernathy was listed as being recalled to Active duty in mid-1944 but no details are available. [18]
