He left her only on 15 April, 1918 when he was appointed in command of a vessel that is illegible in his Service Record. He remained in the role for only two weeks – his only ship command appointment is perhaps lost to time.[4]

Royle was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon his relief on 31 December, 1922. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18 March, 1927. There is no indication that he served in World War II.[6]
