Captain Oswald McDonough English, R.N. (20 November, 1873 – 24 January, 1956) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

English was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1895.

English was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1905.

English was placed on the Retired List at his own request with rank of Captain (retired) on 17 April, 1912.

Acting Captain English was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Vindictive in July, 1915.[1]

On 22 July, 1916, English was appointed Acting Captain of the depot ship Sandhurst.[2]

On some date, English was reinstated as Commander with a seniority of 31 December, 1905 and then, perhaps immediately thereafter, restored to the rank of Captain (retired) on 17 April, 1912. This makes no sense to me!
