Frederick George Stopford
Vice-Admiral (retired) Frederick George Stopford, R.N. (10 May, 1852 – 18 January, 1928) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 28 April, 1876.[1]
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1889.[2]
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1897.[3]
In April 1901, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Talbot.
An inspection of Stopford's command Blenheim in 1902 by Rear-Admiral Grenfell was unsatisfactory. He noted that, "uniform not adhered to; bedding fair, signal staff only fairly efficient; Engr. Murray exceeded wine bill; exercise only fair; submerged tube not properly examined; [illeg order] or 12 Oct 07 neglected; Marine detacht not up to standard." Their Lordships conveyed their dissatisfaction, and the message was apparently taken to heard, as a follow-up inspection on 8 December was satisfactory.[4]
As Captain, he was placed in command of Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham on 5 July, 1904.[5] He performed this duty as a Commodore, Second Class from 13 March, 1905.[6]
Stopford was placed on the Retired List due to age on 10 May, 1907. He was advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral (retired) on 1 June, 1907 and to ViceRN}} (retired) on 30 July, 1912.[7]
