Rice's Torpedo Automatic Sight was a sophisticated self-setting Torpedo Director described in Annual Reports of the Torpedo School[1]
In 1915, it was viewed as a fall-back option should the as-yet untested Middleton Plotter which was proving slow to manufacture should prove unsatisfactory for use in capital ships. The Torpedo School intended to propose to the Admiralty that a pair of devices based upon Rice's design be delivered to H.M.S. Marlborough and H.M.S. Ajax (vessels selected by the Commander-in-Chief) for sea trial.[2]
