Captain Reginald Frederick Nichols, (9 September, 1900 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Nichols was appointed to the battleship Vanguard straight out of the Training Establishment on 7 May, 1917. He was fortunate to somehow survive her loss to explosion on 9 July, and received leave on 15 July, pending the completion of the Enquiry into her demise.[1]
On 4 August, 1917, Nichols was appointed to Erin.
Post-War
On 5 May 1919, Nichols was diagnosed with anemia and nervous exhaustion and given six weeks to recover, being sent ashore from Erin. He was found fit on 7 June. On 3 December, 1919, he was appointed to Burslem.[2]
On 4 November 1920, he was admitted to Portland Hospital with a sprain to his right knee. He was discharged, fit, on the 17th. On 18 March, 1921, he was appointed out of Burslem to the battleship Revenge.[3]
Nichols was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December, 1921.[4]
Nichols was admitted to hospital on 16 August 1922 for a disease of liver and was found fit on 30 August.[5]
Nichols qualified as Lieutenant (N) for all but first-class ships in 1925.[6]
On 1 October, 1928, Nichols took a course to qualify for navigating first-class ships. His new acumen landed him (N) appointments, additional in Hood on 1 January, 1929 and then Queen Elizabeth on 1 April, 1929.[7]
Nichols was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1929.[8]
Nichols was awarded the Shadwell Testimonial for 1931 for a survey he completed of Port Edgar in the Falkland Islands.[9]
Nichols was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1934.[10]
On 13 June, 1938 Nichols was appointed as navigating officer in Southampton and as Squadron (N) Officer and Staff Officer (O) to Rear-Admiral Edward-Collins.
World War II
Nichols was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1942.[11]
On 9 February, 1945, Nichols was appointed to command Ready and to serve as Senior Officer, Eighteenth Minesweeping Flotilla.[12]
On 15 August, 1945 Nichols was appointed Deputy Director of Minesweeping, vice Maclean.[13]
On 5 April, 1946 Nichols was appointed Director of Minesweeping, vice Crombie.[14]
10 January, 1950, Nichols was appointed in command of Cleopatra. He was superseded on 28 November, 1950.[15]
Nichols was placed on the Retired List on 8 January, 1952.[16]
