Captain John Joseph Hyland, (27 March, 1878 – 24 November, 1949) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Hyland was born in England, and immigrated to the US before 1896, when he was appointed to the Naval Academy from Massachusetts, graduating with the Class of 1900. He was commissioned Ensign on 1 July, 1902, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 July, 1905, and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1911.[1][2][3]
In 1915 he commanded armoured cruiser North Carolina when that vessel served as station ship at Pensacola Navy Yard. Hyland was promoted to the rank of Commander on 23 May, 1917.[4] During World War I, he served on battleship Arkansas and was Executive Officer of battleship New Jersey.[5][6] Hyland was promoted to the temporary rank of Captain on 15 August, 1918. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed to command protected cruiser Cleveland until early 1919.[7]
Promoted to the permanent rank of Captain on 31 December, 1921,[8], Hyland commanded several ships throughout the 1920's into the 1930's. These included repair ship Vestal in 1921 to 1923,[9][10], light cruiser Raleigh in 1926 to 1928,[11][12] and battleship Nevada in 1930-1932.[13][14] From 1928 to 1930, he served as Captain of the Yard at the Boston Navy Yard.[15]
Passed over for further promotion, Hyland was placed on the Retired Liston 30 June, 1935.[16] During World War II he was recalled to active duty, serving as an Inspector of Naval Material in the First Naval District.[17]
Hyland died in New York in late 1949.
