Captain (retired) Roland Frith Balfour Swinley, (9 December, 1895 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of M. R. Swinley, Esq., a tea planter. He emerged from the Training Establishment on 15 May 1913 and was appointed to the battleship Dominion of the Home Fleets. He served in her through 22 September 1915 when he was appointed to T.B. 34 for three months.[1]
After brief service in the destroyer Musketeer at the end of 1915, Swinley served in Nymphe until being appointed to Larne on 11 February 1916. He next served in Milbrook from 7 June, 1916 until 12 July, 1917. He was summoned to the Admitalty and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1917.[2]
He next served in Mons from 22 July 1917 through 11 September, 1918 and then Whitley until early 1919.
Swinley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1925.[3]
Swinley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1930.[4]
World War II
Swinley was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit at the rank of Captain on 24 July, 1945.[5]
