Captain Gerald Charles Wynter, D.S.O., R.N., Retired (23 July, 1881 – 4 November, 1940) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Chelsea.
Wynter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903.
Wynter was appointed in command of the destroyer Bullfinch on 11 June, 1908.[1]
Wynter was appointed in command of the destroyer Nemesis on 7 September, 1911.[2]
Wynter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1911.
Wynter did not leave Nemesis until being appointed in command of the "M" Class destroyer Magic in December, 1915, transferring into her at an unrecorded date.
He commanded Magic at the Battle of Jutland where she operated with the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla.[3]
Wynter was placed on the Retired List at hiw own request with the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916.
Wynter was appointed in command of the destroyer Versatile on 19 January, 1918.[4]
Post-War
Wynter was promoted to the rank of Captain on 9 November, 1928.
World War II
Appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Patroclus on 14 September, 1939, Wynter was killed in action on 3-4 November, 1940 when she was torpedoed (six times!) by Kretschmer's U.99.
